Pre-loaded Ultrasonic Unit Saves Time in Automation

Compact ultrasonic actuators with low weight can be easily mounted on robot arms and are thus well suited for fast and low-energy joining of plastic parts. Pre-loading the pneumatic cylinder of the actuator saves time – up to 1 second per weld spot. This is particularly noticeable in applications with many weld spots. Pre-loading means that the cylinder has already been extended via an intelligent pneumatic system when the weld tool gets in contact with the material. Therefore the machine can immediately start the welding process. The time saved in applications with many weld spots may be significant. The joining of acoustic foam for an engine compartment with up to 20 weld spots is an example that is more and more frequently realized by means of robots. In this case, time savings per application may amount to as many as 20 seconds. It is also possible to use several ultrasonic welding systems within automation lines; this is referred to as multi-head applications. Herrmann Ultrasonics has specially developed the VE SLIMLINE product range for automation; the machines are available with frequencies of 20, 30, and 35 kHz and with outputs of up to 6200 Watt. The 35 kHz VE COMPACTLI...

Modular CNC Build Gets You Both A Mill And A Laser Cutter

CNC builds come in all shapes and sizes. There’s delta manipulators, experimental polar rigs, and all manner of cartesian builds, large and small. After completing their first CNC build, [jtaggard] took what they learned and applied it in the development of a new machine. It’s a desk-sized cartesian design, with a frame built from V-slot extrusion cut to size by circular saw. This is a great way to get quality extrusion for a custom build, and is readily available and easy to work with. The gantry rides on wheels, with the X and Y axes being belt driven, plus a screw drive for Z. A couple of NEMA 17s and a NEMA 23 provide motive power, and an Arduino Uno with stepper drivers is the brains of the operation. 1/4″ thick PLA plates are used to assemble everything, and while [jtaggard] intended to replace these with aluminium down the track, so far the plastic has proved plenty rigid enough for early tests of both machining and engraving wood. It’s a great entry-level CNC build, which has proved usable with both a 500W spindle and a 2.5W laser for engraving. Being modular in nature, it would be easy to add other tools, such as a pen plotter or vinyl cutting blade for further versatil...

We’ve established my Ready, Fire, Aim personality and the caveats that may entail. Don’t worry. We are just getting started. For this one, we have to go back in time. Back when I commuted a very long time to work in a sea of cubicles and wanted a bike for weekend fun. This is five or six years ago, and I got a “road bike.” At the time I didn’t have any beef with REI and didn’t really know what “road bike” meant; it was a previous year’s clearance so price was nice, it would fit my frame, and it was aesthetically pleasing to me. That was truly the extent of my needs at the time. Back then, which seems like so long ago now, I went into Sellwood Cycle Repair and got a U-lock. Really nice crew, they actually did quite a bit on kids’ bikes for me and the U-lock was just something else I needed. The guy at the time said something about liking the mid-size model because it easily fit around bike stands and it still fit in his back pocket. To be honest, I was only half listening. Momlyfe requires 50% of all brain activity to be working on other issues during any conversation. You want me to remember something? Put it in writing. It’s not a legal request; it’s an efficiency request. Appa...

I was going through seeds leftover from a seed swap last winter when I spotted some

I was going through seeds leftover from a seed swap last winter when I spotted some luffa seeds. I am always up for a challenge so I tucked them away for planting. Luffa is a member of the gourd family and the young fruit can be harvested like cucumbers. If you let the luffa mature on the vine you can harvest them for the sponge inside. Yes luffa sponges can be grown! I think it’s why I had to try growing them for the first time. I did my research and found out they need a long growing period of about 150 days and lots of warmth. Would they do well in our zone 8 short season climate? Where could I grow them to ensure success? I decided to grow a couple of plants in the greenhouse. I wasn’t sure how old the luffa seeds were so I did some germination testing. I placed five seeds inside a moist paper towel and popped them into a sealed plastic bag. Within five days the seeds germinated. I only had a few that didn’t germinate. It was time to get them in some soil. I planted each seed in a four inch pot using fresh potting mix and placed the seedlings on heat mats in the greenhouse. Heat mats are the best thing ever. They keep the soil warm for your plants and provide quick germinati...

Best garden hose 2020: sprinkle and spray your patch in style with a top-quality hose

A hose is a hose, right? Well not exactly since there are several different types on the market and more ways than one to wind them up. What you want is the best garden hose, and that’s what we have here. Oh-oooh, we’re half way there, oh-oh! Living on a sprayer! Sorry.  Length is usually the buyer’s main concern. If you have a very small patio with a few scattered flowerpots, then consider a length of around five metres. But if you have a substantial lawn to water then go for one in excess of 20 metres. Obviously, the longer the hose the more hassle it will be to roll it up and store it. Unless, of course, you invest in an automatic hose box feeder – something we wholeheartedly recommend – which winds the hose up on its own, leaving you more time to enjoy spring bank holiday japes. For a popular alternative to a bogstandard rubber- and PVC-based hosepipe, try one of the new range of expandable hoses. These models look like a shedded snake skin when empty of water but turn on the pressure and they expand up to three times their length and then shrink back to normal once the water pressure is off. These are great options for those who haven’t got the space to store a ...
