‘Fair-Trade-Plastics’-pays-waste-pickers-improves-recycling-collection logo-pn-color logo-pn-color

Plastics For Change and retailer The Body Shop have formed a partnership to launch a project focusing on “Fair Trade Plastics” to get more plastic waste into the recycling stream. Plastics For Change is the organization behind a new mobile platform which offers urban waste pickers fair market prices for the materials they reclaim from waste sites. The group and The Body Shop, a manufacturer and retailer of beauty products, are both certified under the World Fair Trade Organization. It is hoped that guaranteed Fair Trade pricing will lead to the collection of more plastic waste before it ends up in rivers and, ultimately, in the ocean. “Plastic recycling is a major source of income for the 1 percent of the world’s most marginalized urban population and we are incredibly excited to partner with The Body Shop and other partners to help these groups get the financial and social benefits they deserve. This is the world’s first ever programme of verified Fair Trade plastic collection for use in recycling,” Plastics for Change CEO Andrew Almack said in a news release. India alone has approximately 1.5 million waste pickers who collect and sort more ...

Leeds man leads law on high-speed chase | Courts & Crime

Bond was set Monday at $10,000 cash for a Leeds man who was arrested over the weekend after Morton County authorities say he led them on a chase with speeds nearing 100 mph. Austin Folson, 20, allegedly turned off his headlights, drove erratically and endangered oncoming traffic during the chase, according to the Morton County Sheriff’s Office. Cable Stripper Bureau of Indian Affairs police reported a northbound pursuit on state Highway 6 south of Mandan about 2:40 a.m. Sunday, according to a sheriff’s office affidavit. Morton County authorities say they used a spike strip south of St. Anthony, but Folson refused to stop even after a front tire on his vehicle was flattened. The other front tire was spiked by the Mandan Police Department, but Folson allegedly continued onto Mandan’s Main Street, reaching speeds of 90 mph in a 25 mph zone. Folson lost control as he attempted to turn south on Sixth Avenue but allegedly refused to exit the vehicle. He was forcibly removed and arrested but escaped from a Morton County sheriff’s vehicle and fled on foot, according to authorities. He was later detained and taken to the Burleigh Morton Detention Center. Folson is charged with reck...

City Council disputes grand jury findings on electric scooters

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego City Council is disputing some of the findings of a grand jury report that found the city was slow to regulate electric scooter companies. Council members unanimously approved an official response Monday to the grand jury report released in June. In its response, the city partially disputed that it was slow to regulate electric scooter companies compared to other similarly sized cities. The city cited its Shared Mobility Device Ordinance issued in May that aimed to regulate how companies state scooters and enforce speed restrictions, among other things. The city, however, did not dispute the finding that “reckless and improper use of scooters has resulted in one death and many injuries.” Council President Pro Tem Barbara Bry used her time during the meeting to echo ongoing safety concerns. Overall, the city’s response notes it has implemented all three recommendations put forth in the San Diego County Grand Jury report: instituting rules for scooter companies, having contracts with those companies that protect the city from liability or damages, and providing additional resources for the San Diego Police Department so it can bet...

Travel clothing: Are those pants and vests worth the extra cost?

Travel clothes are specialty attire – belts, dresses, hats, pants and vests – that can cost 30% to 50% more than comparable department store clothes. This conversation is moderated according to USA TODAY’s community rules. Please read the rules before joining the discussion. Travel clothes are specialty attire – belts, dresses, hats, pants and vests – designed for the jet set. With the busy summer travel season just around the corner, travelers may be tempted to buy this attire, which typically costs anywhere from 30% to 50% more than comparable department store clothes. I say “maybe” because there are travelers and there are travelers. If you take a few trips a year, you might not need all of the features travel clothing offers, like fast-dry or wrinkle-free fabric. But if you’re on the road more often, you should consider it. “I have never paid those premiums,” says Patti Worsham, a retired travel agent from Long Beach, California. She says she’s thought about buying those pants “where the bottom zips off” but in all of her travels, she never really needed a pair. Worsham also likes the designer hats, with mesh fabric and ...

Three-vehicle crash in Thornton leaves 1 woman dead, 4 injured

Police suspect alcohol played a role in a three-vehicle crash early Sunday morning in Thornton that killed one woman and injured four people. The crash occurred in the 100 block of Colorado Highway 7 at about 1:41 a.m., according to Thornton police spokesman Jesus Mendez. How to Solve Common Ultrasonic Welding Problems : Plastics Technology

High-frequency vibrations are applied to two parts’ surfaces by a vibrating tool, commonly called a “horn” or “sonotrode.” Diagnostic of a good ultrasonic weld: Within 150 millisec after weld initiation, all parameters of the weld are up to specification and continue to operate smoothly to weld conclusion. Note that while the frequency line at center remains relatively stable, reflecting the output of the power supply, the other parameters vary wildly, as the power supply attempts to compensate for a problem farther downstream in the weld stack. In this case, it is a defective horn. After setup, conduct an initial weld. If the weld fails inspection due to “under welding” (e.g., incomplete weld or inadequate weld depth), an increase in pressure/down speed, energy, or amplitude is probably needed. If the part is “over welded” (e.g. excessive weld depth) a decrease in the same parameters, or a diagnostic display of the weld amplitude, may be needed to identify the problem and bring the weld into specification. Ultrasonic welding is a widely recognized and accepted process for joining thermoplastic materials. It offers many advantages, including process reliability and repeatabilit...

You could start doing push-ups. A study published in February found that men who can hammer

You could start doing push-ups. A study published in February found that men who can hammer out 40 push-ups in one session had a lower risk of heart attacks and cardiovascular disease compared with guys who could do only 10 or fewer. Or you could practice going from sitting on the floor to standing. Another study concluded that how easily people over 50 can do that is a good predictor of how long they might live. Perhaps you want to work on your grip strength. That’s another measure that tracks longevity in middle-aged folks. And if none of those appeal, you could always try improving your walking speed, which researchers have used to predict mortality rates in older adults. The problem with any of these approaches is that you would just be training for a particular test, which misses the point. It’s not the push-up itself that makes you live longer; it’s that you are still strong and nimble enough to execute one. What these tests have in common is they’re good shorthand of things that matter for longevity: overall health, fitness and muscle strength. A fit person walks faster than someone out of shape, and getting up off the floor is tricky for people with weak bon...
